Moving Checklist

Do you wish the moving process could be a little easier? We do. That’s why we’ve created this checklist below to help achieve a more organized and smooth move. 

  • Post office: Change your address at https://moversguide.usps.com/
  • Charge accounts, credit cards Subscriptions: Notice requires several weeks
  • Friends and relatives Bank: Transfer funds; arrange check cashing in your new city.
  • Insurance: Notify new location for coverage: Life, health, fire, auto.
  • Automobile registrations: Transfer of car title registration necessary; also driver’s license; city stickers; motor club membership.
  • Utility Companies: Gas, light, water, telephone, get refund of any deposits made; arrange in new town for immediate service.
  • Route men: Laundry, paperboy, and changeover of services.
  • School records: Ask for a copy of the transfer of your children’s records.
  • Medical, dental, prescription histories: Ask doctor and dentist for referrals; transfer needed prescriptions; eyeglasses, X-rays.
  • Church, club, and civic organizations: Transfer memberships; get a letter of introduction.
  • Pets: Ask about regulations for licenses, vaccinations, tags, etc.

Don’t Forget To:

  • Empty freezer: Plan use of foods
  • Defrost freezer-refrigerator: Place charcoal to dispel odors
  • Have appliances serviced for moving
  • Call Cable Company and/or leave remote antenna equipment
  • Clean rugs or clothing before moving: Have them moving-wrapped
  • With your moving counselor, check insurance coverage, packing and unpacking labor arrival day, various shipping papers, method and time of expected payment
  • Plan for special care needs of infants

On Moving Day:

  • Carry currency, jewelry, and documents yourself
  • Plan for transporting pets; they can be poor traveling companions if unhappy
  • Let close friend or relative know the route and schedule you will travel including overnight stops; use him as a message headquarters
  • Double check closets, drawers, and shelves to be sure they are empty
  • Leave all old keys needed by new tenant or owner with the Attorney or Realtor
